Navy's Largest Destroyer Heads Out to Sea for Trials

By David Sharp, The Associated Press
BATH, Maine - The nation's largest and most expensive destroyer is headed out to sea for final builder trials before being presented to the Navy for inspection.

The future USS Zumwalt departed Bath Iron Works on Monday.

The Zumwalt is the first in a new class of three destroyers that represent a departure from traditional surface warships. They feature an angular shape for stealth, a new wave-piercing hull and electric drive.

The 600-foot ship went to sea for the first time in December to let engineers operate systems at sea. Those assessments were deemed a success.
