WATERVILLE, Maine - A day after their first debate, the three candidates in the hotly contested race for Maine governor reunited at a forum dominated by education and economic issues.
Republican Gov. Paul LePage, Democrat Mike Michaud and independent Eliot Cutler were divided Thursday over whether Maine should lift the 10-school cap on charters.
LePage wants increase the number of charter schools. But Michaud, who opposes lifting the cap, said he's concerned they're siphoning funding away from public schools. Cutler also said he wouldn't immediately lift the cap.
The forum at Waterville's Thomas College was not without heated moments.
Michaud blasted LePage's vacation policy for his political appointees. After both Cutler and Michaud stood to deliver their closing statement, LePage remarked that he wouldn't stand because he "doesn't like looking down on people.''
