Republican Placed in Disputed Maine Senate Seat

AUGUSTA, Maine - Republican Cathy Manchester has been placed in a disputed Cumberland County Senate seat.

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap had said Democrat Cathy Breen would be provisionally seated, but the Republican-controlled Senate voted 20-14 on Wednesday to seat Manchester while a special election committee resolves the issue.

Unofficial results had shown Breen as the winner, but a recount flipped the results in Manchester's favor.

Democrats have raised concerns about 21 ballots cast for Manchester in Long Island that were found in the recount. There are now more ballots than voters who were counted on Election Day.

The Senate also formally created the special election committee that will investigate the issue. The committee will be led by Republican Sen. Roger Katz and it's expected to hold its first meeting on Wednesday.
