While Maine is known for its high voter turnouts in general elections, it’s nearly last in the nation in responding to the 2020 Census.
Secretary of State Matt Dunlap, who serves as chair of the U.S. Census Complete Count Committee, says Mainers should take the census seriously.
“It’s wicked important for allocating things like election funds, transportation funds, apportioning congressional districts,” he says, “you name it.”
Dunlap, who was a guest Monday on Maine Calling, is urging Mainers to go online to 2020census.gov and spend five minutes filling out the form.
As of two days ago, the census ranks Maine as 47th in the nation for its response rate, above only New Mexico, West Virginia, and Alaska. Minnesota tops the list.
