King Blasts Trump For Diverting Disaster Funds For Border Wall

Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, center, with Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., left, walks to the Senate chamber for votes on federal judges, at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, July 31, 2019.

Just as the first hurricane of the season is threatening the US, President Trump has ordered the diversion of $271 million in disaster relief funds to speed up construction of the wall on the Mexican border.  Maine U.S. Sen. Angus King says Trump has exceeded his presidential authority in doing so.King says any diversion of tax funding from one purpose to another is the role of Congress, not the president, and that Trump could well be violating the Constitution.

King is also critical of Trump's reported comments to those building the wall that they should get it done by next year’s election, and that if they violate a law in the process, he will pardon them.

King says if that report in the Washington Post is true, it represents an outrageous abuse of presidential authority.
