Maine Ski Area Going Solar

GREENWOOD, Maine - A Maine skiing area will soon unveil 803 solar-electric panels it says will offset 70 percent of its electricity use.

The Portland Press Herald reports the Mt. Abram Ski Area in Greenwood will hold a public ceremony and tour of its acre of solar panels on Nov. 6. Owners expect the panels to generate enough kilowatt hours over the years to power 46 average Maine homes and offset nearly three quarters of the ski area's electricity use.

The output will make Mt. Abram the second ski area in the country to get much of its electricity from renewable sources. The other is solar-and-wind powered Berkshire East in Massachusetts.

The $940,000 solar project was funded in part by a 25 percent matching grant from the federal Department of Agriculture.
