A biologist for the Downeast Salmon Federation is monitoring what he says is another sizeable fish kill on the Union River below a Brookfield Asset Management dam in Ellsworth.

Fisheries biologist Brett Ciccotelli says that he was alerted to the fish kill Friday afternoon and arrived to find hundreds of dead and dying baby alewives, also known as river herring, near the bottom of the Leonard Lake Dam.

Environmental advocates say that thousands of young alewives are dying in the Union River below the Ellsworth dam – maybe hundreds of thousands.

Brett Ciccotelli is a fisheries biologist with the Downeast Salmon Federation.

"It's not the first time, as people know in Ellsworth,” he said. “It's an ongoing tragedy there. But for the river and the ecology but also the fishery. I mean this is a Heritage fishery in Maine.”

EAST MACHIAS, Maine - A conservation group in rural Maine is welcoming fish lovers to dine on smoked herring by a river while celebrating the spring migration.
Downeast Salmon Federation is setting up smokehouses near the East Machias River while thousands of river herring head upstream. The group says the herring provide important cover to young, rare migrating Atlantic salmon.

ELLSWORTH, Maine - A Down East Maine environmental group is encouraging the public to show up for a public meeting about the relicensing of dams on a river in a rural part of the state.
The Ellsworth City Council is hosting the meeting on March 28 at Ellsworth High School. The Downeast Salmon Federation, which advocates for the removal of dams to make way for fish habitat, is calling on people to attend.

SULLIVAN, Maine - A conservation group has acquired about seven acres in Down East Maine as part of a dam removal project.
The Downeast Salmon Federation says it has taken ownership of the parcel in Sullivan that surrounds the head of tide of Smelt Brook, which has been blocked by a stone dam for more than 50 years.
The group says the acquisition is part of a "multi-faceted land conservation and habitat restoration project'' designed to reconnect Smelt Brook to Smelt Cove.

MACHIAS, Maine - The Downeast Salmon Federation is training volunteers to help survey the rainbow smelt populations in Downeast Maine.

The group is holding training sessions for volunteers in Machias on Thursday and Pembroke on Friday. The group says the survey is a "massive data collection effort'' to learn more about the smelt population status in the area.

Information collected by volunteers will assist the salmon federation, state regulators and others in managing the smelt fishery.

MACHIAS, Maine (AP) _ Maine Gov. Paul LePage is giving $25,000 to the Downeast Salmon Federation to help with improving the East Machias Aquatic Research Center.

LePage says Friday the money to aid the Columbia Falls-based federation will come from state contingency funds. The federation is working to conserve wild Atlantic salmon populations in Maine.
