RUMFORD, Maine - A Canadian company is entering into an agreement to buy the Rumford Paper Co. mill.
The Portland Press Herald reports Catalyst Paper Corp. wants to buy the mill as part of a $74 million deal to purchase two mills owned by NewPage Corp. The other mill is in Wisconsin.
Catalyst says the deal is contingent on the completion of a $1.4 billion merger between NewPage and rival paper maker Verso Paper Corp. That merger is expected by the end of the year. Verso owns two Maine mills - one in Jay and one in Bucksport, which is planned for closure on Dec. 1.
The Rumford mill is the town's largest taxpayer and about 800 people work there.
