Biomass Plants in West Enfield, Jonesboro to Close

A spokesperson for Covanta Energey says low energy prices are behind the decision to close two biomass plants in Maine.

Covanta announced Thursday that it would shut down its operations in West Enfield and Jonesboro.

The two plants burn biomass and sell the electricity that's generated to ISO New England.

But the unseasonably warm winter has depressed energy prices, which Covanta communications chief James Regan says has hurt the ability to turn a profit.

"If economics improved, the facilities could be possibly reopened," he says. "We'll continue to evaluate the future of both plants."

A total of 44 people work at the West Enfield and Jonesboro facilities.

Regan says they're being encouraged to apply for other jobs at the company.
