Canadian Produce Company Buys Maine's Backyard Farms

A Maine-based producer of year-round greenhouse tomatoes is being bought by a 77-year-old Canadian produce company.

Backyard Farms in Madison - just celebrating its tenth birthday this year - will become the sixth North American farm site for Ontario based Mastronardi Produce, which markets some of its tomatoes to consumers under the Sunset, Kumato, Zima, and Angel Sweet labels.

According to Mastronardi, Backyard Farms will continue to operate with its current leadership and team in place, and provide "non-GMO" produce to New England.

Backyard Farms' 42 acres of growing space joins Mastronardi's nearly 4,000 acres already in production, while its 200 employees join the Canadian company's payroll of about 3,000.
