ALFRED, Maine —A psychologist has testified that just months before the slaying, a 76-year-old Biddeford landlord charged with killing two tenants suffered a "mini-stroke" that profoundly changed his behavior.
Psychologist Kerry Drach testified Thursday in York County Superior Court that James Pak's family noticed that his memory was poor and that he lost his temper more often after the stroke.
Pak is charged with two counts of murder in connection with the December 2012 shooting deaths of 19-year-old Derrick Thompson and 18-year-old Alivia Welch in a dispute over parking and snow removal.
Pak has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Thursday's court hearing is meant to determine whether Pak is competent to stand trial.
A second psychologist, Robert Riley, testified that he examined Pak twice and found him competent.
