Disability Rights Maine File Suit Against Department Of Corrections

Disability Rights Maine has filed a lawsuit against Maine's Department of Corrections (DOC).

The suit, filed in District Court in Bangor, alleges that the DOC has failed to provide Disability Rights records of recent suicide attempts at Long Creek Youth Development Center.

In court filings, Disability Rights, which is charged with protecting the rights of people with mental illness in Maine, says it opened an investigation into Long Creek this summer after receiving multiple complaints of abuse, neglect, and attempted suicides at the juvenile detention center. The group alleges the state has illegally blocked Disability Rights from full access to the records of youth who attempted suicide, and is asking the court to intervene.

The Department of Corrections has not responded to a request for comment.
