Hack Compromised Personal Information Of 30K Patients, InterMed Announces
InterMed, a physician group based in southern Maine, announced this week that personal information of about 30,000 patients was compromised through an email hack.According to a press release, an unauthorized individual first gained access to an employee's email account in early September, and three other staff accounts were likely hacked in the following days.
The email accounts contained patient information that may have included birth dates, clinical information, and, in a limited number of cases, Social Security numbers.
InterMed says it hired a national forensics team to investigate and is working to strengthen security. The company has also set up a toll free number for patients with questions about the incident.
