Climber Rescued from Maine's Tumbledown Mountain

BYRON, Maine (AP) _ Game wardens say a Maine climber who suffered a compound fracture of her leg has been rescued from Tumbledown Mountain.

Officials say rescuers had to carry 28-year-old Maris Toland of Portland off the mountain overnight over difficult terrain. She was airlifted to Maine Medical Center Wednesday morning.

Toland was rock climbing when she fell and broke her leg on Tuesday.

All told, 31 people assisted in rescue effort. The Maine Warden Service was assisted by Mahoosuc Search and Rescue and personnel from Mt. Blue State Park and six fire departments.
