Stranger Buys New Bikes for Lewiston Children

LEWISTON, Maine — Two Lewiston children whose new bicycles were stolen the day after Christmas are smiling again.

An anonymous stranger dropped off bikes for 13-year-old Austin Westleigh and his 10-year-old sister, Kelsey, after a story about the heartless theft appeared in the Sun Journal newspaper.

The story prompted dozens of offers from around Maine and out of state to buy new bikes.

Austin and Kelsey's widowed mother, Vicky, was hesitant to accept the offers of generosity, thinking that whoever took her children's Christmas presents might return them.

The children had placed a handwritten sign outside their home asking for the return of their bikes.

The sign was replaced with a new one on Tuesday that read: "Whoever brought us new bikes, thank you so much — we love them a lot!"
