Camden National Bank Launches Homeless Initiative

CAMDEN, Maine - A Maine bank is kicking off a program to support Maine's homeless shelters with every new mortgage it issues.

"What we want to do is to raise the awareness and the dialog about homelessness in the state of Maine," says Camden National Bank President and CEO Greg Dufour.

Dufour says that for each home financed through Camden National bank this year, the bank will donate $100 to a local homeless shelter in the new homeowner's name. He says the bank felt that doing it this way would bring more exposure to the issue than simply cutting a check.

"We're engaging our customers in that dialog right at the start," he says, "and making the connection of their enjoyment of receiving a home or purchasing a home, at the same time, through us, helping people who are homeless."

Called the Hope@Home program, Dufour says depending on how many mortgages are signed, the bank expects donations to reach into five figures or beyond.
