Edgecomb Teacher in Top 10 for $1 Million International Prize

EDGECOMB, Maine — An innovative educator from Maine has been named one of ten finalists for a $1 million international prize.

The Varkey Foundation announced Friday that Nancie Atwell, founder of the Center for Teaching and Learning, a private elementary and middle school in Edgecomb, is a finalist for its new Global Teacher Prize.

The winner will be announced March 15 in Dubai.

Atwell founded the center in 1990 as a nonprofit demonstration school to develop and disseminate effective classroom practices. The faculty conducts seminars and invites teachers from across the U.S. to spend a week at the school to experience its methods. She has also written nine books about teaching.

More than 5,000 teachers from 127 countries were originally nominated.

Atwell is one of three finalists from the U.S.
