Alone on an Island: Extreme Winter Weather Strands Maine Scientist

FRIENDSHIP LONG ISLAND, Maine - Many of us have been inconvenienced by this year's extreme winter weather, but perhaps few more than lobster researcher Diane Cowan. Cowan is the founder of the Lobster Conservancy, and she's lived and worked on Friendship Long Island, on the Midcoast, since 1999. But this year, thanks to heavy ice, she's been stuck alone on the island for over a month.

Although she doesn't have running water, Cowan does have her dog for company. She has phone and Internet service, and she has plenty of food. And she has a few other things, thanks to friends who air-dropped a care package last week. Nora Flaherty caught up with Cowan by phone.

Nora is originally from the Boston area but has lived in Chicago, Michigan, New York City and at the northern tip of New York state. Nora began working in public radio at Michigan Radio in Ann Arbor and has been an on-air host, a reporter, a digital editor, a producer, and, when they let her, played records.
