Drone Photo Business Draws Attention from FAA

GORHAM, Maine (AP) _ A Gorham man who has a website advertising his side business taking aerial photographs and videos from a drone has caught the attention of the federal Aviation Administration.

A local FAA manager told Steve Girard last week that an investigator would contact him and want him to pull down the website.

Some legal experts say the FAA's demand could be a violation of Girard's right to free speech.

Last month the FAA proposed rules for flying drones commercially but it could take a year before any are approved.

A regional FAA spokesman told the Portland Press Herald  that the FAA will not allow any drone operation that poses a hazard to other aircraft or people and property on the ground. He also acknowledged that the FAA has no right to demand that Girard take down his website.
