Lawsuit Over 2010 Chairlift Accident at Sugarloaf is Settled

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine - A Delaware couple has reached an out-of-court settlement with the Sugarloaf ski area over a 2010 chairlift malfunction that sent them and their two daughters plunging about 30 feet.

A Sugarloaf spokesman said the settlement with Michael and Patricia Katz of Wilmington, Delaware, brings to an end litigation stemming from the December 2010 incident. The lawsuit contended the father suffered a traumatic brain injury and that both girls suffered closed-head injuries.

The Sun Journal reported the settlement Monday. Terms were not disclosed.

The family was riding on the East Spillway lift when a cable jumped out a wheel assembly, causing five chairs to plummet. That chairlift was removed and replaced with a new one. Seven people were hurt in another incident last March when a different lift began moving backward.
