Good Strawberry Crop Expected in Maine This Year

ORONO, Maine - Maine's strawberry season is getting underway, with many growers in southern areas, up through Augusta, opening for "pick-your-own" this past weekend, or planning to open this coming weekend.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension Small Fruit Specialist David Handley says he doesn't expect a bumper crop this year, but expects it to be a good one.

Handley says this winter's heavy snow protected the plants, which had a lot of blooms. He says earlier berries have been larger later than later ones because of dry weather, but rates flavor as being very good.

Handley says in recent years, warm weather has led to a number of early strawberry seasons, but this time of year is what's considered normal for picking strawberries in Maine.

Ed is a Maine native who spent his early childhood in Livermore Falls before moving to Farmington. He graduated from Mount Blue High School in 1970 before going to the University of Maine at Orono where he received his BA in speech in 1974 with a broadcast concentration. It was during that time that he first became involved with public broadcasting. He served as an intern for what was then called MPBN TV and also did volunteer work for MPBN Radio.
