Lovejoy Award Given to New Yorker Staff Writer

WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) _ A reporter who won a Pulitzer Prize for exposing dire conditions in group homes for the mentally disabled is this year's recipient of Colby College's Lovejoy Award.

Colby President David Greene says Katherine Boo, now a staff writer for New Yorker magazine, will receive the award and deliver an address on Oct. 5 at Lorimar Chapel.

Greene, who was a member of the committee that selected Boo for the award, describes the journalist and author as exposing ``gut-wrenching tragedies as well as the moments of personal triumph.''

The award is named for Elijah Parish Lovejoy, a Colby alumnus who became the nation's first martyr to freedom of the press when he was killed in 1837 over anti-slavery editorials in Illinois.
