Maine Gov Says US 'Irresponsible' to Allow Syrian Refugees

AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine Gov. Paul LePage says it is "irresponsible'' to let Syrian refugees into America because they could be a threat to the country's security.

The Republican governor plans to talk about the issue in a radio address on Monday. A copy of the address that his staff sent to media beforehand says LePage is concerned that he doesn't know if Maine has any Syrian refugees at this time.

LePage plans to say in the address that the Maine Department of Public Safety and Maine Emergency Management Agency are working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and federal Department of Homeland Security to monitor any possible threats.

He says it is part of his commitment as governor to make sure Maine isn't a "sanctuary state'' for undocumented immigrants.
