Time Warner Cable to Pay $125k to Settle Franchise Fees Suit

FAIRFIELD, Maine - Time Warner Cable has agreed to pay $125,000 to the town of Fairfield to settle a lawsuit brought in response to the cable company's franchise fees.

The Morning Sentinel reports Time Warner will also raise franchise fees paid to the Somerset County town from 5 percent of basic cable TV services to 5 percent of all gross revenue over the next two months.

Bill Lee, Fairfield's attorney, says the lawsuit was all about changing the franchise fee rate. The town will now receive money tied to pay-per-view channels and other cable services as part of the total gross revenue.

Lee says Fairfield officials agreed to the settlement because a trial would've been costly and time-consuming.

Time Warner Cable was sold to Stamford, Connecticut-based Charter Communications Inc. in May.
