Ice Buildup Derails Locomotive in Leeds

LEEDS, Maine - Rail officials say an ice buildup derailed a Pan Am train locomotive in Leeds, Maine.

Pan Am Railways Executive Vice President Cynthia Scarano says no one was hurt Tuesday morning and there was no damage to the locomotive. She said a crane was brought in to tow the diesel-powered locomotive, which weighs about 160,000 pounds.

Pan Am is the largest freight operator in Maine, with about 380 employees and 1,700 miles of track stretching from the New Hampshire border to Canada and west to Rumford. The locomotive was headed there to pick up freight cars.
