Wardens: Snowmobiles Narrowly Escape Tragedy On Thin Ice

Maine Game Wardens say four snowmobile operators narrowly avoided tragedy after encountering thin ice.

Wardens say two snowmobiles crashed through ice early Saturday on Sebec Lake, north of Dover-Foxcroft. Both operators scrambled to safety but three of them ended up trapped on thin ice. The fourth rode to an unoccupied camp seeking warmth.

Cpl. John MacDonald said a game warden used a canoe to rescue 30-year-old Timothy Carignan and 31-year-old Nicholas Smith, of Berwick, and 32-year-old Nathan Lynch, of North Berwick.

Officials then went looking for 39-year-old James Taylor from Dover, New Hampshire, and found him severely hypothermic in a camp. He was taken to a hospital.

Wardens say two snowmobiles remain at the bottom of the lake, and a third remains on the thin ice. An investigation is continuing.
