Elderly Advocates Decry LePage Veto of Meals on Wheels Funding

AUGUSTA, Maine - Gov. Paul LePage has vetoed Meals on Wheels funding as a line item in the proposed state budget.

The executive director of the Maine Association of Area Agencies on Aging, Jessica Maurer, says she's shocked that the governor crossed off the proposed $55,000 funding for the program.

"It's remarkable, particularly because the governor's rhetoric suggests that he wants to support Maine's elderly," Maurer says. "He wants to do away with wait lists. And this bill was, in fact, a bill that would help older adults come off the wait list for a critically needed service."

Maurer says 200 older adults are currently on a wait list for the Meals on Wheels program, which has seen an increased demand and flat funding in recent years.
