AUGUSTA, Maine - A group calling itself Mainers for Accountable Elections got the ball rolling Wednesday in support of a referendum to increase accountability and transparency in elections.
According to a press release, a new website has been launched and a rally is planned for later this month to officially kick off the campaign.
Anne Luther is the treasurer for the group. She describes its efforts as groundbreaking. "We have the opportunity to lead the country in campaign finance reform," she says, "and ensure that politicians are accountable to us – the voters – not big corporations and special interests."
Luther says more than 81,000 Mainers signed a petition to put the referendum on this November’s ballot.
