Gun Sales Iniative Approved for Maine Ballot

PORTLAND, Maine - A citizens' initiative that would expand requirements for background checks in firearm sales is headed for a vote.

Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap says supporters of the initiative gathered 65,821 signatures, enough to qualify it for the ballot in November.  A minimum of 61,123 signatures were needed to bring the issue to a vote.

The legislation proposes to require background checks for gun sales or transfers between individuals who aren't licensed firearm dealers.  There are some exceptions to that requirement, such as gun transfers between family members.

The bill first goes to the Maine Legislature for consideration.  But lawmakers seldom enact citizen initiatives, and generally send them out to voters.
