AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine's senators are in favor of a bill that would extend the statute of limitations for lawsuits that stem from unsolved homicides.
The Senate unanimously approved a bill that would lengthen the current two-year window from the date of the victim's death.
The proposal would provide families with six years from the time they become aware that there might be cause for a civil action. Sen. Linda Valentino, a Saco Democrat, says the rule change would give families more time for evidence to be gathered.
The measure also needs approval from the House. The Senate approved it on Tuesday.
