Collins: U.S. House Version of Budget Won't Fly in Senate

AUGUSTA, Maine - Budget writers in the U.S. House have completed work on their version of the federal budget for the year, starting Oct. 1.

But Collins, who sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee, says the House version of the federal budget is not going anywhere in the Senate.

House budget writers want to reduce federal spending below the levels set by Congress last fall. To accomplish that goal, they want some across-the-board cuts in certain spending areas. Collins says that is a non-starter for the Senate.

"There are a certain number of members who want to go back to those across-the-board, indiscriminate cuts known as sequestration. I think that would be a disaster," she says.

Collins says most senators are opposed to changing the spending levels - totaling an overall $1.7 trillion - that Congress agreed to last fall.
