Five Men at Maine Veterans Home In Scarborough Die From COVID-19

Five more people have died from COVID-19 in Maine. The total number of deaths is now 44, and the state Center for Disease Control has confirmed 30 additional cases, for a total of 937. Four hundred eighty-five people have recovered from COVID-19 in Maine.

The five new COVID-19 fatalities all came from the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.

Maine Center for Disease Control Director Dr. Nirav Shah made the announcement at his daily briefing Thursday afternoon.

"Each of these men was a veteran. Each of these men served his country. And we'd like to just take a moment to honor that selfless service to this country."

One was a man in his 50s from Cumberland County. The others were two men in their 70s and two men in their 90s, all from Cumberland County.  Deaths among residents at nursing homes now account for more than half of the total 44 confirmed deaths in the state due to COVID-19.  

A total of 10 residents at the Scarborough nursing home have died, where 30 residents and 18 staffers have tested positive.
