Sept. 11 would become a state holiday under a proposal before the Maine Legislature.
East Machias Republican Rep. Will Tuell says he has had requests from several constituents to introduce legislation designed to honor first responders, and believes the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, would be an appropriate day for a holiday.
“There’s an entire generation of kids born after 9/11 who will read of it in the history books, may ask their parents about it, who are also unaware of what all the law enforcement and first responders did that day,” he says.
The measure drew no opposition at its public hearing, but the Maine Municipal Association says a survey of its policy committee indicates that there may be better ways to honor first responders than a holiday on which many would still have to work.
“The municipal officials that participated in the survey expressed their respect for first responders and highlighted the challenges that they are facing with recruiting and retaining the very individuals who perform these vital services in their community. They question if a day off is the best way to honor their sacrifices,” says Rebecca Graham with the association.
