Sunday, May 11: Ellen Gawler

The Gawler Family holding their instruments.

Music is an important part of our lives - whether you're an avid listener, active performer, or someone who enjoys returning to their childhood instrument from time to time just for a little fun at home or in the company of friends. For this week's State of the Art guest, music is often a family affair.

Ellen Gawler has been a violin and fiddle teacher for over 25 years. Her three daughters, Molly, Edith, and Elsie, happen to be great musicians, too! They've been making music together for years as the Gawler Family Band. This week on State of the Art, Ellen joins host Sarah Tuttle for a conversation about motherhood and music-making with family. You might even hear a suggestion or two about encouraging your child to practice!

Sarah Tuttle has been making music since she was small, and her interests reach from the Pre-Baroque era to the music being written today. Most recently, she spent three years in Germany living and working as an opera singer, where she was able to perform a wide variety of repertoire, from Handel to Humperdinck, Bizet to Wagner. Sarah has called Maine her home state since she was ten, where she's since made music with more than a few local ensembles, including the Down East Singers and the Bowdoin Chorus.
