Maine Delegates Say Canada Violating Trade Laws with Paper Mill Subsidies

WASHINGTON - Members of Maine's congressional delegation today sent a letter to the U.S. International Trade Commission regarding what they say are unfair subsidies received by a Canadian paper mill.

Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King, as well as 2nd District Congressman Bruce Poliquin, told the ITC that the Canadian government violated U.S. trade laws when it gave subsidies to some paper producers, causing the price of smooth, so-called "supercalendared" paper to plummet.

As a result, Maine's Madison Paper Mill briefly curtailed production earlier this year and laid off most non-salaried employees for two weeks.

The delegation members are urging the International Trade Commission to issue a preliminary determination of material injury.
