UMaine Augusta Opens Cyber Security Degree Program

The University of Maine at Augusta has formally opened its cyber security center, one of only ten in the nation that allow hands-on training in protection against cyber attacks.

The University started to develop the center five years ago, and it now has 248 students in its degree program.

Prof. Henry Felch says the facility is training students to deal with a range of cyber security threats.

“The range that we saw here today actually contains live viruses, live malware, live ransomware, but it is all self-contained so it can’t get out,” Felch says. “So we can practice, ask the what if questions.”

The program is also developing cyber security training for municipalities and businesses.

“We can even help train or provide training and outreach to communities, to Maine businesses,” Felch says.
