WASHINGTON - Maine Sen. Susan Collins told fellow senators they should finally act on legislation to improve the security of the nation's computer networks, in both the public and private sectors.
Collins pointed to the long string of successful hacker attacks on federal government computer systems as well as those on private banks that have compromised the personal data of tens of millions of Americans."How many more of these do we have to have occur before Congress finally acts?" she asked.
Collins says three years ago she argued on the Senate floor for legislation that would improve the nation's ability to fight efforts to hack important computer systems.
She says the legislation she is supporting will not guarantee the safety of computer systems because no law can do that, but she says it would be a big improvement.
