DJ Soul Slinger & guests perform in the Atrium windows

Carlos Slinger aka Soul Slinger was a founder of Liquid Sky Design, the rave emporium that was one of the centers of dance music culture, art and design in the early nineties. A proponent of open source performance, Soul Slinger often collaborates with other DJ’s, musicians and vocalists during improvised sets where multiple artists are performing at once. Although credited with having helped bring Drum and Bass to the US, he incorporates many different styles and genres. Soul Slinger will be joined by locals Nic (Nicotine) Edwards and Hi Tiger.

Good Days

Installation in the Atrium Window’s on Congress Street Presented in partnership with Maine Center for Blah Blah Blah (formerly Maine Center for Electronic Music) with generous support from Maine Humanities Council and Maine Arts Commission and Space Gallery

An elaboration on the recent group exhibition Lovers Fight Tonight, curated by local multi-media artist Hi Tiger, Good Days extends the concept of hybrid retail, art, and community spaces. Inspired by pioneering fashion and music stores such as Liquid Sky Design and Patricia Field that helped catalyze the culture around dance music production in the 80’s and 90’s, Good Days will be punctuated by live DJ performances in the Library’s Congress Street Atrium. The exhibit, also installed in the Library’s atrium, will be on display through mid-August. Soul Slinger, the co-founder of Liquid Sky Design, will join the installation for an experimental electronic music performance in Monument Square as the installation comes to a close.

This exhibition reflects the curator and founder of MCBBB, Hi Tiger’s exploration over the past year of mental health as it relates to cultural production. The working title is Good Days based on the Hip-hop / R&B song by the artist, SZA. As a way to address our collective well being, Good Days is designed to be a gathering place inspired by the retail stores, cafés and clubs that were crucial to the formation of community in the days before social media. DIY publications, event flyers, street art and fashion were forms of outreach around new music genres such as House, Techno and Drum & Bass and Jungle. Now some of the most popular, these genres were stewarded by artists whose innovation in visual design and production technique we now broadly refer to as electronic music.

On Display outside the Main Library in the Elm Street windows
PPL will be exhibiting their photographs from the popular social media #BookFaceFriday series. Although steeped in the analogue world of books, libraries all over world have been bringing their love of books to social media in an art form called BookFaceFriday since around 2015. PPL joined the ranks of these creative librarians years ago and has now amassed a collection of well done photographs that have been posted to Social Media. BookFaceFriday involves the cover of a book with a body on it which is then lined up with a real person to match the cover – confused? Come take a look! The exhibit will be in the Elm Street windows through the month of July!
