Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Summer Splendor Sale will be packed with important artwork and decorative rarities. The sale includes large selections of American and European art, antique, custom & modern design furniture, jewelry & watches, estate silver, Asian artifacts, folk art & marine items, and art pottery.

Featured artwork by American artists will include: a circa 1920 oil on canvas painting depicting Manayunk Canal swimming in Philadelphia by Robert Spencer; Gilbert Stuart’s oil portrait of young gentleman, Alexander William Walker (1780-1863); William Preston Phelps’ monumental painting of a Mount Monadnock, NH valley pasture in autumn; “Reverie”, a work depicting a young woman by Irving Ramsey Wiles; and a graphite study of pirates for “Treasure Island” by N.C. Wyeth. There will also be original works by: Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth, William Frederick De Haas, Stan Stokes, James Gardiner Babbidge, Thomas Hart Benton, William Matthew Prior, and many others.

Important European paintings will be presented, including: “Le Chariot d’Arras” by Jean-Baptiste Corot, a summer landscape by Alfred Sisley, a 19th Century portrait of three cows by John of Colchester Vine, and several Old Master works.

A selection of outstanding modernist art will also be sold, such as: an impasto knifework oil on canvas painting of mountains under a sunlit sky by Etel Adnan, an untitled oil on linen abstract by Auguste Herbin, and an abstract watercolor on paper by Salvatore Scarpitta.

The sale will offer a diverse group of folk art, including: a drawing by outsider artist Bill Traylor of a dancing man and dog; a rare carved and painted Great White Shark plaque by Wick Ahrens; a handcrafted wooden fishing creel by Medway, ME artisan Emil Robichaud, a fish painting by Southern folk artist Mose Tolliver; plus carved bird decoys, ship models, scrimshaw, nautical instruments, and weathervanes.

Historic ephemera will include: a 1792 George Washington signed letter, a George Washington personal wax seal, a 1796 Warren, ME land deed signed by Henry and Lucy Knox, and multiple lots of photographs taken during Arctic expeditions of explorer, philanthropist, researcher, and teacher Donald Baxter MacMillan between 1923 and 1932.

The 183-lot collection of estate jewelry & watches will offer a many gem-set pieces, most with appraisals, plus wristwatches by Rolex, Cartier, Bucherer and others, and a wide selection of pocket watches by American and European makers. There will also be an 18th Century English Chippendale tall clock with chinoiserie decorated surface and a 1920s era French-made electric clock mounted in a frosted “Deux Figurines” Lalique art glass panel.

A 17th Century Italian walnut refectory table will lead the antique furniture collection, along with an English camphorwood campaign desk/chest, a 19th Century West Indian mahogany carved four poster bed, a circa 1890 Thonet bentwood chaise lounge, and a pine four-drawer farmhouse table. The sale will also offer a large selection of Danish midcentury modern pieces, such as a “Papa Bear” chair by Hans Wegner and a Peter Nielsen rosewood desk; plus custom creations by Windsor Chairmakers, D.R. Dimes and Lawrence Crouse.

The sale will also present three amazing art pottery vases by Brother Thomas Bezanson (Canada/VT, 1929-2007), plus works from Grueby, Newcomb College, and Harrison McIntosh (CA, 1914-2016). There will also be fine porcelain by Herend, Sevres and Royal Doulton; and a collection of early mochaware. Leading the silver category will be flatware sets by Tiffany & Co. and Georg Jensen; a 183-troy oz. English Edwardian sterling tray by Elkington & Co.; plus multiple lots of Arts & Crafts period hand wrought sterling, including several pieces by Pennsylvania silversmith Joel F. Hewes.

Featured among the large selection of Asian artifacts will be a 17th c. giltwood figure of a seated ascetic figure, a pair of huanghuali wood tables, a Japanese Edo Period circa 1840 Samurai Kabuto helmet, and a Japanese Meiji Period Maki-e lacquer portable picnic set.

Other items of interest will include: three fine estate automobiles, led by a 2006 Jaguar XJ Super V8; a Cary’s 1816 terrestrial library globe on stand; 3 English leather animal figures by Dmitri Omersa; and a large selection of vintage technology, including early cameras, projectors, music boxes, computers, glass slides, stereoviews, and postcards.
