Some salon owners in Maine say they want to know what's in some of the cosmetic products they use. They plan to deliver more than 400 letters today urging the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to require companies to report on whether any of four "phthalate" chemicals are in their products.
Kathy Kilrain del Rio, of the Maine Women's Policy Center, says reporting is the least the companies can do with regard to these chemicals. "The science is clear - that phthalates are among the worst of the worst," she said. "In fact, you could even say phthalates are the evil twin to 'BPA.' "
BPA is a chemical that has been removed from many water bottles and baby sippy cups. Today is the last day the public can provide comment on the proposed phthalate rule. The state agency will have four months to make its final determination.
