Maine Prepares To Install High-Speed Electric Car Chargers

KENNEBUNK, Maine - An energy efficiency agency in Maine says the first string in a statewide web of high-speed electric vehicle chargers will be installed next year.Efficiency Maine says it has contacted California-based ChargePoint Inc. to install and operate seven new charging stations on Maine's highways. The Kennebec Journal reports the stations will be installed at visitors' plazas in Kennebunk, West Gardiner, Farmington and Jackman.

The agency says each location will feature two so-called ultra-fast chargers.

It is expected to cost $1.7 million to install and help maintain the seven charging stations over a seven-year contract with ChargePoint. Efficiency Maine's contribution comes out of the $21 million paid to the state by Volkswagen as a result of the company's fuel emissions scandal.
