2 Maine Groups Opposed to Marijuana Legalization Mobilize

AUGUSTA, Maine — Two groups opposed to the legalization of recreational marijuana use in Maine are banding together to fight those efforts.

Supporters of Smart Approaches to Marijuana Maine and the Maine Alliance to Prevent Substance Abuse on Monday launched a yearlong effort to educate residents about the potential harmful effects of pot on youth and public health.

Two pro-legalization groups want to put a ballot question before voters later this year. State legislators may also consider a legalization bill.

The legalization opponents say pot is addictive, can cause health problems, can increase the risk of car crashes and can lead to the use of more dangerous substances.

Volunteers are already traveling from across the state to meet with community and school groups about marijuana and present science-based evidence of pot's effects.
