Maine Task Force Issues Preliminary Public Health Recommendations On PFAS

A state task force examining the presence of the toxic chemicals PFAS in Maine has issued its preliminary recommendations to protect public health, including testing Maine's drinking water and food supplies for exposure.

"There needs to be more action, and there needs to be a timetable," says Patrick MacRoy of the Environmental Health Strategy Center.  "And to more comprehensively test drinking water and to actually set health protective standards rather than rely on the outdated information from the US EPA."

PFAS are 'forever chemicals' used to make consumer products stain, water, and heat resistant. They can cause health issues ranging from developmental delays to an increased risk of cancer.

A public comment period on Maine's draft recommendations is open through Friday, December 6, 2019.
