WASHINGTON - Members of the state's congressional delegation have been briefed by the National Transportation Safety Board about the ongoing investigation into the loss of the cargo ship El Faro off the coast of Florida.
The captain and three crew members are from Maine. "They just kind of explained to us all of the facets of what is going on and how they intend to look for every possible piece of information," says 1st District Representative Chellie Pingree.
Pingree says the Navy will be enlisted to help search for the black box recorder that's expected to provide a wealth of information about what happened.
The ship sank in about 15,000 feet of water and it will take specialized equipment from the Navy to recover the recorder. The investigation could take as long as 18 months to complete.
