Portland will soon keep the Oxford Street Shelter open around the clock, a move that will give homeless people a place to stay throughout the day.

Jessica Grondin, a city spokesperson, says the benefits will extend beyond helping the homeless. "So it should help the surrounding business community and the neighborhood and really support these people who are just looking for a place to have other support during the day time," Grondin says.

The service will be temporary and will not include meals. A new one-story shelter that will provide meals on-site, along with other services, including mental and health services, is currently underway.

The committee will meet Tuesday evening to discuss the planning process.
