Verdict Expected In 1980 Killing That Baffled Authorities

BANGOR, Maine - A judge is scheduled to release a verdict in a murder trial that could bring a resolution to a nearly 40-year-old killing in Maine.

Fifty-seven-year-old Philip Scott Fournier faces a charge of killing 16-year-old Joyce McLain in East Millinocket in 1980. Superior Court Justice Ann Murray is expected to issue her verdict at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in a Bangor court.

Final arguments in the case were held earlier in February. A defense lawyer said ``doubts will linger'' over the case regardless of whether Fournier's convicted. The defense also said Fournier's memories, which are central to the case, are unreliable.

There isn't physical evidence tying Fournier to the crime scene, but prosecutors say he confessed numerous times over the years.

McLain disappeared jogging and her body was found two days later.
