Maine Health Care Enrollment Jumps to More than 74 Thousand

WASHINGTON - Enrollment numbers for the 2015 health insurance Marketplace are in. More than 74,000 Mainers signed up. That's compared to more than 44,000 Mainers last year.

Word of mouth likely drove the higher numbers, as did penalties for not getting insurance coverage, says Emily Brostek, executive director of Consumers for Affordable Health Care.

"And realizing the impact that will have, and the number will be going up if they didn't get covered this year, was a motivating factor for some people," she says.

The penalties for remaining uninsured in 2015 with be $325 per adult, or 2 percent of household income, whichever is higher.

The total number in the U.S. enrolled in the Marketplace now stands at 11.4 million.  Last year, 8 million were enrolled in the Marketplace.
