It will be a first: come next April, two astronauts from Maine will be in space at the same time.

NASA astronaut Christopher Cassidy, who considers York, Maine his hometown, will be making his third space flight, along with two Russian cosmonauts. Cassidy will join Caribou-native Dr. Jessica Meir aboard the International Space Station for a nine day handover period until her first mission comes to an end. Cassidy says he spoke with Meir just before she launched in September about the possibility that their missions could overlap.

“You know that there's a slight chance that we could even do a space walk together, which I think would be amazing,” he says.

When Meir and her crewmates leave the ISS, Cassidy will become commander and remain aboard the station until October 2020.
