'Fair Pint' Bill Headed to Maine Gov's Desk

AUGUSTA, Maine - A bill designed to ensure that Mainers get to enjoy every sip of beer they pay for is on its way to Gov. Paul LePage.

The Republican-controlled Senate gave Democratic Sen. John Patrick's bill final approval on Thursday.

Under the bill, bars and restaurants that advertise that a beer is a pint must sell it in a glass that's at least 16 ounces. Supporters of the measure contend that some establishments use shorter glasses for beers they advertise as pints.

Patrick says "Maine people should know they're getting what they pay for - and not an ounce less.''

The state's top liquor inspector has said that the measure would be impossible to enforce. Some Republican lawmakers opposed the bill because they said it would add another unnecessary regulation on businesses.
