Central Maine Healthcare announced Wednesday that about 300 staff will be furloughed.
The organization, which operates three hospitals in Lewiston, Rumford and Bridgton, says in a written release that the move is needed as the health care system experiences steep declines in revenue after suspending elective procedures to prepare for COVID-19.
Company officials say many of the staff took the furlough voluntarily and work in nonclinical areas.
Senior executives are also taking pay cuts.
The furloughs will take effect April 12 and are expected to last about 90 days.
